Battlefield Rashomopolis
Over the weekend, I watched Metropolis, Rashomon, and Battlefield Earth. Can you guess which I liked least?
Quaoar?
No offense intended to the Tongva people, but I wish scientists could have come up with a slightly more pronounceable name for the new planetoid on the block. “Quaoar” is such an open-mouthed wa-wa kind of name.
Oh well, I suppose it’s better than “Uranus.”
FontLover
It seems that most free font and clipart sites have taken their marketing cue from the pornographic web, and turned the search for free fonts into a tiresome, aggravating wade through a soup of popup windows, misleading banners, and lists of dead links.
But thanks to the blog concept, FontLover is here to point us to more reputable providers of type, free and paid. Through their Font Scoop (and corresponding archive), we find sites like Utopia Fonts, Chank, Aenigma, and of course, Font-a-Licious.
Any other freebie type repositories to suggest? (Update: Sauron Software (in Italian) and Clipserver have large archives of “classical” print fonts, useful for almost any publication or project.
Quicktime Codecs
Brief overview of Quicktime compression codecs. I normally use Cinepak to compress videos destined for multimedia CD-ROM, but I didn’t know Sorenson was good for that too.
Capellini con funghi e spinaci
I just whipped up a giant bowl of Capellini con funghi portabella i spinaci, drenched in olive oil, with microwave meatballs on the side. My own improv recipe. I love living in Little Italy near Whole Foods. Yum yum.

Den Beste on CDMA and GSM in the cellphone industry. Very detailed, very informative. I must admit that I too have been guilty of purveying the meme that “GSM is superior and US cellphones are so behind,” but I hadn’t even been aware that CDMA was a relatively new technology with so much promise.
Back in Manila, My mom had a Mobiline CDMA phone, but it was severely limited, as compared to my Globe GSM phone’s text-messaging capabilities. But then, I suppose other factors were (1) Nokia’s domination of the cellphone market, and (2) the cellular provider’s own service aptitude. Mobiline (which later became Piltel/Smart Telecom) was a PLDT subsidiary. Figures.
iWant an iBook.
iBlog. You most certainly do. (Note to blogpopuli visitors: The blogroots-intended content was the link to iBlog. All that follows is my own personal rambling.)
I’m about 90% certain that before this year is out, I will have traded in my Dell laptop for an iBook. The school uses Mac, OSX looks like a dream come true, these Windows security problems are getting on my nerves, and like, dude, Steven totally convinced me.
My only reservations so far are (1) the lack of a MacOS driver for the Pencam, and (2) Zeldman’s OS X Blues. I’m hoping that both issues are resolved by the time I make the commitment.
