Zaurus Dreams

I found someone selling a secondhand Sharp Zaurus SL-5000D real cheap, and I’m very seriously considering it. Despite the OS X sync issues, the price it’s going for is well worth it for an expandable high-res internet-capable Linux handheld with rich media playback capability; I get a SD image viewer and MP3 player as well as a PDA, which is exactly what I’ve been looking for, short of a combo cellphone.

Send Later

How hard would it be for Apple to include “Send Later” and “Send Queued Messages” menu items in Mail.app, I wonder? Being a dialup user half the time, I’m not always ready to fire off my messages from the hip, so right now I need to hit the Send button, wait for a dialog, select Send Later, then restart Mail.app when I do connect so it sends automatically.

A message queue should be a fairly basic feature, and I’m happy with Mail.app otherwise.

Palm Overboard

Darn it, darn it, darn it. I lost my Palm yesterday; it must have slid out of my slacks pocket in the taxi on the way to church. Just a Zire, so it’s not too much of a blow to my finances, and I had the presence of mind to sync the same morning, so my data is all intact.

Well, if the taxi company doesn’t have it today, I’m effectively in the market for a new cheap handheld. That Zaurus would look good if it were only OS X compatible. Or maybe the Tungsten-T?

(Update: Whoa, the Tungsten is waaaay too expensive. I’m going to look at lower-end combo models first while I investigate better anti-loss solutions for keeping handhelds on my person. Buying another one is useless if it’s just going to slide out of my pocket again.)

Peace Be

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

I’m very much in need of peace today; it has been another tiring, frustrating, and somewhat heartbreaking day for me; not much of an Easter, I must say. Yet there are blessings aplenty to be counted, and reasons enough for joy: Jesus, having paid the price for our sin, and trampled death under His feet, today He is risen, and we rejoice.

Update, one year later: Christos Aneste!

ReEno

Yet another sound piece up: “ReEno,” (MP3, 2.2MB) a collection of tweaked OS startup sounds blended into a 2.5-minute ambient sound comp. Inspiration loosely drawn from the tonal works of Wendy Carlos and Brian Eno. (Eno is said to have composed startup sounds for both Windows and Mac, though I can find no reference to his having composed the Mac chord.)

Update: Thanks, lupuS, for the quick tip. Yes, I found a MeFi thread where kindall mentions jazz guitarist Stanley Jordan composing the startup strum for earlier Macs, which was the basis for the fuller, richer startup chord we all know and love today.

Update: I was in error with this post; it seems that the Mac startup chord was done by Jim Reekes.

By His Stripes

And at the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Cultic How-To’s

Sparticus has a quick primer on cult-starting: Part 1, Part 2. Kaanibs and Benevolents should take note.

Speaking of which, my two favorite Filipino cults have a web presence once again: Kaanib.net, your *cough* “Christian community portal” is back, with stories of a festive mood and a wip of fresh spirit. (Never fear that the past is lost, however: Classic Kaanib.net lives on!) The PBMA is back as well, at Rubenian International, complete with a virtual tour of the Promised Land.

Procrastinatory Anticipation

With only two weeks of class left, and four major projects still due between now and then, you can expect my blogging volume to increase significantly, as the motivation to procrastinate grows by leaps and bounds.
