We Lost Eldred

“Disney has now succeeded in preventing anyone from doing to Mickey Mouse what Disney did to Quasimodo.” It’s ironic that Disney, a corporation which made its fortune rehashing fairy tales from the public domain, has now succeeded in destroying that same public domain for all modern time about two more decades. (Or at least until legislation is reversed.) More from MeFi and Lessig.

I’ve always thought it embarrassing that a company that isn’t doing anything with a particular work should prohibit others from taking part in it, through rerelease or recreation. Greed just sucks.

I dunno about prevention. Businesses in China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong have been printing lopsided Mickeyes and Minnieys on their 100% polyester shirts for years!
