    That last line is so marvelous — you can almost hear a fist pounding down to emphatically punctuate the never, never, never. I don’t think I’ve ever sung that hymn without it strengthening my faith, if only for the moment, in the powerful, protective presence of God.

    This is one of my favourite hymns. My church has never sung this hymn, but it is at the beginning of J. Vernon McGhee’s Back To The Bible and I just began a bible study that sings hymns before discussion and this is one I particularly like to sing. Thanks for the posting of it. It was truly needed

    It’s a great hymn, a marvel of power and assurance. It was sung at the funerals of Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, and Robert E. Lee. John Rippon, who wrote it, died on 17 December 1836 and I posted it in his honor on his memorial anniversary a couple of weeks ago.
