Budget Lunacy

Ironically, President Bush’s proposed budget allocates more money for spaceships to the moon, but completely eliminates subsidies for passenger rail service. If that passes Congress, I fully expect that by 2010, a ride to Luna Base One will be far cheaper than the Amtrak Regional to New York Penn Station.

Jeez, that’s ridiculous. Maybe we could figure out a way to fly between major east coast cities on space shuttles if Amtrak has to shut down.

  2. While I understand how much traffic Amtrak gets on the East coast, they run a lot of very low traffic lines in other parts of the country they they really ought to shut down. Unfortunately, by my understanding, due to Amtrak’s quasi-government ownership, they are forced to keep the unprofitable lines running.

The government needs to get out of the passenger train business, and let the market dictate where there is demand for passenger train service.
