We went up to the Albany, NY area at the end of July to see Amy’s cousin Jason get married, and also visit her grandma. Along the way we saw some exotic northern destinations like Schenectady, Niskayuna, Guilderland, and Rensselaer.
Amy’s parents also drove us up to Speculator, NY to visit her brother Bob at his place of work: a summer camp up in the Adirondacks. It’s a nice, simple place on the sandy shores of Lake Pleasant, with lovely landscapes, quirky and classically rural American decor, and lots of stuff to do for kids. Amy also noted that pretty much every roadside residence and establishment had a locally crafted wooden bear outside of it.
I would be amiss not to highlight the art at Albany Airport. While I’ve previously mentioned the ALB Interfaith Prayer Room installation, there’s also an art gallery upstairs, and several interesting sculptures scattered about the concourse. And the airport shopping! Some of the newsstand souvenirs are as unto fine art in themselves.
Soon we were back on a Dash 8 regional turboprop back to DC, but Upstate New York will always have a special place in my heart.
