Kind of Funny

I was just downstairs in Starbucks, and they were playing a lovely remake of Tears for Fears’ Mad World. Apparently what I heard was a 2003 acoustic version by Michael Andrews, performed by Gary Jules. Very nice; I don’t remember having heard such a hauntingly proficient remake since Tori Amos did Smells Like Teen Spirit and Angie. Ah, those angsty freshman days.

(Yes, I know this entry is a bizarrely out-of-character post for me, the person who only listens to music from before the 19th Century and has a special abhorrence for the 80s, but this struck a chord somehow. Okay, okay, I stop now. Me freaking self out.)

What’s equally as surprising is that you’re aware of the existence of these songs, despite your distaste for them. I’ve met people here who didn’t even know that Gary Jules’s version of “Mad World” was a remake.

Like MS-DOS, can you believe that a whole generation of kids are growing up not knowing who Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith are?

I first heard Jules’ verion on Morning Becomes Ecclectic on KCRW in LA and loved it. iTunes Music Store has a good selection of Jules’ music but alas not that one. Must be a liscensing issue or something.

Better late than never! I read somewhere that Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith of Tears for Fears were tickled pink to see their song get back to the top of the charts after two decades.

that version of the song is from the movie ‘donnie darko’. it’s a rather bizarre movie, and the song fits it perfectly. a very nice song, yes.

Was that song not big over in the states? It was huge here. Christmas number one and all (that’s big deal).

  6. Paulo says:

It was, but I didn’t notice back then. I hardly listen to this stuff.

Oh. My. Gosh. Paulo just wrote an ENTIRE post about a Tears for Fears song. Gasp. *faints*
