The Jefferson Rock changes. Very upsetting. People who pollute such places with graffitti are evil.

Sounds like a great trip. I've been to Harper's Ferry, though neither recently nor on a honeymoon, and enjoyed it.

The floor vent is for heating; my grandmother's house (ca. 1930) had these, so they're not all that ancient. The coal furnace (later gas) in the basement blew hot air into the first floor, and the hot air then rose to the second floor through the grates. It's a simple and effective system, and also provides hours of fun for visiting grandchildren -- listening to adult conversations, lowering plastic spiders on unsuspecting siblings, inventing all sorts of practical jokes.
