Near the end of the movie “Dr. Strangelove, or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb,” bomber captain Major Kong struggles to unlatch a stuck atomic bomb from the payload bay of his bomber. It releases with him still on it, and he “cowboys” all the way down,, yelling and whooping and waving his hat in one of the most hauntingly funny symbols of the Cold War superpowers’ attitude towards nuclear warfare.
