I just dropped my beloved Firefox. I just started running Mandrake 10 and I was tired of repeated browser crashes just when I was getting something usefull done. Or Three minute page loading.

And yes, I tried numerous releases and configurations.

I'll give Opera a shot and if I like it I'll pay to have that DAMN ad bar removed.

Dan

I use three browsers--Mozilla, Firefox and Opera. I have them all to make sure my layout does not break in any browser.

Anyway, my only complaint about Opera is the side panel. I can push it away from view but can't seem to permanently close it? Am I missing something?

Dang Paulo, you have just nailed every single issue about why Opera still has it's merits. It does do tab browsing so much better than Firefox and that CSS switcher is a thing of beauty (although firefox's edit css plugin is ever more amazing, if only they combined the two somehow).

In response to the "Why not use Firefox?" posts, I've already answered above: I want quick CSS/image mode toggling, and a tabbed browser workspace that doesn't overflow into the rest of my OS at all. That, without having to hunt up plugins. Opera gives me that by default, though it's making it harder and harder to put up with it with each new version, which is why I *have* indeed been using Firefox more and more lately.

Just a note: I keep Opera, IE, Firefox, and Netscape 4.x open on my desktop in the office at all times.

You may also be interested in the Web Developer extension for Firefox. Among other things, it allows you to toggle CSS and images. :)

Aye. I second what Daniel says. Why not Firefox? The only reason I have Opera kicking around is to make sure I haven't botched my CSS beyond repair.

"I don't want any chat, newsreading, or even email functionality; I just want a nice, default-looking browser which lets me use the web, with back/forward buttons to top-left, ad banner to top-right, address bar below them, status bar at the bottom, and a wide, uninterrupted, virgin browsing space."

Why not use Firefox??? I haven't touched Opera in since Mozilla 1.x anyway.
