iBook Resurrection
Fri 18 Jul 2003 13:45:29
Wednesday night was long and late, but very much worth it: I trekked down to the Clarendon Apple Store, where the Genius Bar looked over my iBook and replaced my battery -- for free on warranty! It is really good to have a charge lifespan of four hours again, rather than ten minutes.
Two potentially useful OS X freeware apps: LiFTP, simple freeware FTP client; and ThumbsUp, quick and easy drag-and-drop image thumbnail generator.

Dude ... why not go to the Towson Town Center? Or maybe Clarendon was closer since maybe I remember you work in DC?
Yup, far easier to take the Metro to Clarendon from work at Dupont Circle, rather than the MTA 8 Bus to Towson from the Harbor!
yeah, that's what i was gonna say.. and it's closer for US to go to Towson... and you're in the city. but nevermind, it doesn't matter...
and, the BEST FTP thing is "Interarchy" though you have to pay for it, i think it's one of the best.
ThumbsUp still exists? The last time I had a version was for my PC and that was over seven years ago.
Still, it was a cool shareware program and it got a lot of use.
Hey, by the way, I changed my domain and host. :)
Congratulations on your longer battery life... it's a small but meaningful joy I have also experienced!
Is this not the very same problem you have had repeatedly with this machine? Sound like a lemon. Or maybe Macs are just flaky.
I think this thing is a semi-lemon. There have been numerous hardware issues. I guess that'll teach me to buy refurb.
I think Macs are just flaky and no one will admit it. Look, the emperor is NAKED! No, child, we just aren't smart/visionary/trendy enough to understand the kind of clothes he is wearing.
Horsefeathers and applesauce, I say!

Rod, here's a news flash: Macs are hardware too! Yea! I know, I didn't believe it at first either. While they are more attractive, easier to use, more reliable and more expensive than Wintel machines, they share the same general weakness: stuff breaks.
My iBook (a refurb too) just went through a spate of break downs, including a 40 minute battery. I got AppleCare and got it all fixed under that (except for the battery).
Still, I'd take my iBook over a free Wintel machine any time.
Paulo, glad to hear you're back up and running.
Ha, ha! Yeah, I know all that. Computer hardware is what I do for a living. However, I love to tease people about their gadgets, because while so many people just go on and on about them, their just machines to me.
I actually got started on Mac - my college bought about two dozen of the very first ones back in 1984. I did my college papers on those Macs and they were a God-send.

"Just machine? JUST MACHINE?!" DO NOT TAUNT THE MAC!!! DO NOT!!! Know ye not that it is joy and life to we who have seen the Light?!?!
;D
