I have a copy of the game on zip. I tried playing it on the newer machines and it's still the same experience. Of course I had to name all my crew after ST:TOS. (Bones was an Elowan...get it? Plantman? herbal medicine? hehe). As soon as I find a copy of the wheel code (the early version of copy protection), I'm planning to go through those galaxies again and bring home some more artifacts and lifeforms.
